Horslypse set to raise the roof at Strule Arts Centre

OMAGH band The Horslypse will pay tribute to 70's Celtic rock super group Horslips, at Strule Arts Centre on Saturday, September 8. This young band are set to raise the roof of the Arts Centre with their extensive repertoire of 40 songs which spans the entire Horslips catalogue.

Back in 2004 organ player Michael Rafferty formed the idea of bringing together a group of musicians for one performance in tribute to the band. As the idea began to gather realistic potential, Ryan O'Sullivan was approached and soon recruited as the group's guitar player. As word spread about the possibility of a tribute band forming, it became apparent that a number of other musicians, who cited Horslips as a main influence, were interested.

Ireland’s only tribute to Horslips play Forum gig

HORSLYPSE, Ireland’s only tribute band to 70s Celtic-Rock supergroup Horslips play The Forum, Waterford on Saturday, August 25. Now two years together, Horslypse was originally formed by a group of skilled musicians to perform a oneoff show for charity.

But, due to huge interest in their performance, the band subsequently came together again and have performed concerts right across Ireland.

Reviewing Tonite's Gig: Horslypse

Firstly, Barry came on to rapturous applause to sing GOTN backed by Horslypse. He also came back a little while later to do Furniture another track expertly handled by the lads in Horslypse. Jim & Johnny duly made their appearance and the hall which was already fairly hoppin' went wild. From here on in it was a case of 'rollback' the years as among others Trouble, KOTF and a house raising Dearg Doom to finish were performed to an audience gone wild. Everyone was on their feet. I swear I felt the hair raise on the back of my neck. It was almost like being transported back in time. Of course it had to come to an end and following Dearg Doom the 'bands' made their way off the stage only to be forced to return as the 'Horslips' chant reached a crescendo. So back they came to finish the night as one might expect with - Shakin' All Over. It felt right. A wonderful performance by Horslypse enhanced by the presence of Johnny, Jim & Barry and all for a good cause too...

A great 'find' of a six-year old discussion in the alt.music.byrds group. Although the topic is rock reference books, a casual mention of 'Nighttown Boy' spurs a number of posts on Horslips with information on several North American gigs.

I saw them in '78 at Rutgers University in New Brunswick, N.J., and again a few days later at William Paterson College in Wayne, N.J., and interviewed Carr backstage at that gig. A year or two later I interviewed him again at Mercury Records for the "Short Stories" album and saw the band at The Show Place in Dover,
N.J. Johnny Fean sang a great version of "Shakin' All Over" at that gig. -- Jim Bohen

The Stadium was packed to the door. All you could hear was "Horslips! Horslips! Horslips!"

If they didn’t show soon the place would be torn apart. Marion was going mental. She was up on the seat cheering "Horslips!" She pulled him by the sweater. "Come on!" she cried. "Get up here!" Up he got. The screams were unbelievable. Then out of nowhere appears Eamon Carr the drummer with a giant shamrock on the backside of his satin suit. He starts pummeling the drums like a madman. Before you know it the band are into "Johnny’s Wedding" and the place has gone absolutely apeshit. Charlie O’Connor’s mandolin is like something possessed. It's like it has a tiny music demon inside of it and is away off on little silver legs never to by caught by anyone ever again. "It’s good to be back in Dublin!" cried the bass player. A thousand scarves and woolly hats went into the air. "This one's called 'The High Reel'," he said and Marion fell off the arm of the seat right on top of Malachy. "Come on," she said, "Let’s dance!" and dragged him out into the middle of the floor, shaking her strawberry blonde hair like a wild thing.
